Vision plays a vital role in a child’s growth, learning, and overall development. Good vision supports a child’s ability to read, write, play, and interact with the world around them. When left uncorrected, vision problems can impact academic performance, confidence and even behavior. Because of this, it is especially important for parents and caregivers to prioritize regular eye exams as part of a child’s overall health care routine.

The Appalachian Center for Advanced Eye Care at Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) provides complete eye exams for children and teens across the region. Exams are performed by experienced optometrists who specialize in detecting childhood vision conditions, including Amblyopia (lazy eye), Strabismus (crossed eyes), and other common or complex issues. Early detection of these conditions can make a significant difference in how a child sees and experiences the world.

Routine eye exams are more than just vision checks. They help detect a wide range of conditions that may not show obvious symptoms early on. In Kentucky, comprehensive eye exams are required for all children entering Head Start or kindergarten. These exams allow healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat potential vision problems early, giving children a stronger foundation for success both in and out of the classroom.

It’s important to note that even if a child shows no signs of vision trouble early in life, problems can still develop as they grow. Parents can play an active role in supporting their child’s eye health by scheduling regular exams, encouraging outdoor play to reduce screen time, promoting healthy sleep habits and using protective eyewear and sunglasses when needed.

PMC optometrists offer pediatric eye exams every Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM. If corrective lenses are needed, prescriptions for glasses can also be provided. For more information or to schedule a visit, call (606) 430-2209 or visit <a href="https://It's important to note that even if a child shows no signs of vision trouble early in life, problems can still develop as they grow.

As summer begins to wrap up, parents and students are preparing for the return to school. Pencils, pens, notebooks and paper are necessities, and so is scheduling a comprehensive eye exam. A child’s vision can change frequently as they go through school, so regular eye exams with an optometrist are vitally important.

The Appalachian Center for Advanced Eye Care at Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) proudly offers a wide range of Optometry services for adult and pediatric patients. For pediatric patients, it’s important to catch any potential problems early and to resolve any issues before they risk impacting the child’s development, especially in school.

To provide parents with a convenient and high-quality option for care, PMC developed a dedicated Pediatric Optometry Clinic, which is held weekly on Wednesdays from 8am-3:30pm. This clinic allows parents a convenient way to make appointments and bring their child in for check-ups and eye exams.

Kentucky requires all children entering preschool, Head Start or public school for the first time to have an eye examination no later than January 1 of the school year.

In addition to being good practice, bringing young children in for eye exams also allows potential problems to be caught earlier. According to the Kentucky Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, there are two common childhood eye problems not usually detected. These are strabismus and amblyopia, which affect an estimated three to five percent of all children. These common conditions, if detected early enough, can be reversed.

Early eye exams can help detect these and other conditions sooner, therefore allowing treatment to begin sooner.

PMC Pediatric Optometrists are accepting new patients. To learn more about the services provided or to make an appointment, please call 606-430-2209 or visit pikevillehospital.org/optometry-clinic/.
