Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) surgeons are getting more detail and greater accuracy during surgeries using the Visera 4K Ultra High Definition system. This state-of-the-art system provides four times the resolution, better light, and twice the color as high-definition monitor systems that are normally used during surgical procedures. In fact, this technology is the same as what is used in the filming of Netflix 4K shows and other major television and movie projects.

The Visera 4K UHD system improves visual elements, resolution, and color for the surgeons as they operate with increased precision and confidence, thus improving the quality of care PMC can provide to patients undergoing general, orthopedic, weight loss, and gynecological surgeries.

PMC strives to stay on the technology forefront in order to provide quality care for patients through less invasive surgeries and faster recovery.

When deciding where to have your next surgery, insist on 4K technology. For more information, call 606-430-3500.

While the Commonwealth is still battling the coronavirus pandemic, Kentuckians are settling into a new normal. Healthcare is leading the way by safely resuming previously restricted services.
Hospitals throughout the state were required to postpone elective surgeries and only provide emergent services during the early onset of COVID-19 and Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) complied. Those patients who were asked to wait on their surgical procedures are being contacted to reschedule as the PMC Surgery Department resumes elective surgical procedures.

PMC AVP of Surgical Services Andrea Akers RN, BSN explained, “We have never been closed, even during this pandemic. Our teams have continued to provide emergency surgery for multiple cardiac cases, traumas, stroke and more. We are excited to extend our services to once again, perform elective procedures. We are ready and so are our patients.”

Akers says patients have been anxious to get the go-ahead to reschedule their surgery.

She added, “We have procedures in place for screening upon entry to the hospital, safe social distancing and hand hygiene, all designed to enhance safety measures for patients and visitors. Exposure to additional people is held to a minimum as personal vehicles become waiting areas during surgery. Discharge information is explained car side when the patient is delivered back to their designated driver and is ready to leave.”

Extra steps are taken to keep patients, visitors and staff safe including a required patient pre-surgery Covid-19 test.

Akers explained that her staff works hard to communicate with visitors and deliver any necessary updates during procedures. They also provide a cell phone for patients to talk with their loved ones before surgery begins.

The Commonwealth of Kentucky has put together a plan to slowly re-open the economy. Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) continues to follow the recommendations of Governor Andy Beshear as they begin to re-open medical services for the community.

One of the first areas to re-open is the surgery department. Special measures are being made with a focus on safety.

PMC’s temporary visitation policy is still in place. Family members are currently not allowed in the facility with a patient for outpatient surgery unless the patient is less than 18 years of age.

For all scheduled surgical procedures, patients are required to undergo a COVID-19 test prior to the procedure. They are also required to self-quarantine after the test until their surgery is completed.

Patients will need a designated driver on their surgery day. Their driver will be asked to remain in the vehicle for the duration of the procedure. Staff will be available at the 3rd-floor parking garage entrance if needed for assistance or updates on the patient’s procedure.

Information will be collected, upon arrival, to identify the designated drivers’ vehicle make, model, color, and their phone number. The driver will receive a numbered tag that must be placed on the vehicle for patient discharge identification.

Staff will also enter the driver’s telephone number into the tracking board system allowing them to receive updates on the procedure. If drivers do not have a cell phone and would like an update, staff will be available to call and get updates for them.

When the procedure is complete and the patient has recovered, the driver will be called and directed to a designated parking space. Staff will bring the patient to the vehicle, where discharge instructions will be discussed.

Again, these measures are designed to keep patients, visitors and staff safe during this ongoing pandemic.

For additional information regarding surgical procedures, call 606-430-3500.

Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) is the first hospital in Eastern Kentucky to acquire the latest system available in stereotactic surgical techniques. The ATEC Stereotactic Biopsy from Hologic incorporates imaging, local anesthesia, and tissue extraction, all in one system. This technology assists surgeons in providing specialized care for early detection of breast cancer.

Stereotactic breast biopsy is a nonsurgical method of extracting a test sample of a breast abnormality and is performed by specially trained technologists on an outpatient basis. A stereotactic breast biopsy is an option when a mammogram shows breast abnormalities, no matter how small.

“PMC has created a special suite for the stereotactic biopsy procedure, allowing our surgeons to perform image-guided breast biopsies,” explained PMC Surgical Oncologist Nicholas Schaub. “I use the results from this procedure to help diagnose and treat breast cancers.”

The entire procedure, from start to finish, can be performed in less than one hour. It is also much less invasive than surgical biopsy and leaves the patient with very minimal scarring, compared to a traditional lumpectomy. Tissue samples are sent to the pathology division of the newly expanded PMC laboratory for processing.

Stereotactic breast biopsy is now offered every Friday in a dedicated surgical suite, so patients have the comfort and privacy needed for this type of diagnostic procedure. Early detection is the key to breast cancer survival. Please discuss screening options with your physician.

For more information about surgical services offered at PMC, please call 606-430-3500.
