When your new little one needs a bit of extra care, the Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is there to support each infant and family every step of the way. PMC has the only Level II Advanced NICU in Eastern Kentucky and can care for babies born prematurely or with a lower birth weight. PMC also has two experienced neonatologists to care for babies born prematurely or with advanced medical needs.

PMC’s NICU staff consists of experienced neonatologists, resident physicians, primary nurses, respiratory therapists, speech and occupational therapists and more – all there to meet every child’s unique medical needs.

The PMC NICU team not only cares for children born at the medical center – PMC has a state-of-the-art NICU transporter that allows their team to travel to other hospitals and safely transport fragile newborns to or from PMC for advanced care, so children near and far can receive the attention and care they need.

In addition, The PMC Foundation for Quality Healthcare is pleased to have received a grant from the Little Giraffe Foundation to support the Level II Advanced NICU Family Support Initiative. Upon baby’s discharge from the NICU, PMC gifts each family a care bag filled with essential care items to help alleviate some of the daily challenges of NICU life.

PMC’s NICU staff not only sends families home with the resources they need to give their baby the best possible start in life, but they are also prepared to help families choose a pediatrician before leaving the hospital. This is just one of the many ways PMC is dedicated to helping families leave the hospital feeling confident and prepared to care for their babies.

A woman has unique health needs that change throughout her life. With this in mind, Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) established the Eastern Kentucky Advanced Women’s Care Center to offer comprehensive services to meet those needs from pregnancy through childbirth and the health of the entire female reproductive system. PMC offers Eastern Kentucky’s largest on-call, board-certified team of seven OB/GYN physicians who provide specialized services for complete obstetrical and gynecologic care, ensuring women within the region have access to the care they need.

The Eastern Kentucky Advanced Women’s Care Center at PMC offers women’s well screenings, family planning, guidance on fertility matters, pregnancy and postpartum care, minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries, menopausal care and more.

Similar to seeing a primary care provider, it is important for a woman to see an OB/GYN throughout her life. Regular visits allow for early detection and prevention of potential health issues. Through routine check-ups, screenings and tests, an OB/GYN can identify abnormalities or signs of illness that may not be apparent to the patient. Early detection helps healthcare providers act promptly in interventional and treatment measures, improving outcomes and preventing the progression of certain conditions.

Establishing a relationship with an OB/GYN physician provides an opportunity for women to discuss any concerns or questions they may have in a confidential and supportive environment, which encourages women to take an active role in managing their own health.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer affecting women, and health officials have designated the month of January to spread awareness and educate the public. In the United States, nearly 11,500 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year compared to more than 197,000 cases of lung cancer. These lower numbers are largely attributed to cancer screenings and other preventive measures.

Cervical cancer is a cancer that begins in the cervix, which is in the lower part of a woman’s uterus. Almost all cases are linked to infection caused by a virus known as HPV (human papillomavirus), which the majority of women will come in contact with during their lifetime. HPV infections usually present no symptoms, and in most cases, the immune system will clear HPV from a woman’s body. However, persistent or long-term HPV infections can cause abnormal cells to develop in the cervix, which can become cancerous.

While advancements in healthcare have improved prevention and detection, cervical cancer remains a serious issue. To lessen the rates of cervical cancer, it is essential to understand its risk factors and the importance of early detection. The Advanced Women’s Care Center at Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) has the area’s largest OB/GYN team, featuring seven highly experienced, board-certified physicians. The PMC OB/GYN team spends time discussing risk factors with patients and encouraging preventive measures such as regular screenings and vaccinations.

Risk factors of cervical cancer include HPV, smoking, a weakened immune system and long-term use of oral contraceptives. The HPV vaccine is a powerful tool in preventing cervical cancer. Administered to adolescents before they become sexually active, the HPV vaccine protects against several high-risk strains. Other prevention measures include regular pap smears and safe sex practices. The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin receiving pap smears at age 21 and continue every three years until age 29. From ages 30 to 65, a combination of Pap smears and HPV tests is recommended every five years.

When diagnosed in the early stages, cervical cancer is among the most successfully treatable types of cancer. Health officials widely believe that a unified approach to prevention, screening for and treating cervical cancer can lead to its elimination as a public health concern within the next several years.

For more information or to schedule an appointment with a PMC OB/GYN provider, call (606)-430-2207.

As the new year gets underway, many people are committed to health-related goals as part of a new year resolution. While the majority of these are focused on beginning fitness and weight loss journeys, healthcare providers say it is also a great time to focus on overall health and wellness. Likewise, OB-GYN physicians say there is no better time for women to prioritize their specific health needs.

The team at the Eastern Kentucky Advanced Women’s Care Center at Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) is led by seven OB-GYN physicians that make up the largest on-call, board certified OB-GYN team in Eastern Kentucky. This experienced team of physicians is supported by a dedicated and compassionate team focused on all aspects of women’s health including well screenings, family planning, menopausal care, pregnancy and postpartum care as well as minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries and more.

For mothers-to-be who are navigating the journey of pregnancy, the Eastern Kentucky Advanced Women’s Care Center guides patients through this incredible chapter of life. Pregnancy and childbirth can be overwhelming, and the team at PMC strives to provide the support patients need every step of the way.

PMC’s skilled obstetricians manage the various stages of labor, delivery and postpartum care, working closely with mothers to ensure safe and comfortable birthing experiences and employing medical interventions when necessary.

Where they are going to give birth is vitally important for women to consider as they choose an OB-GYN physician to care for them during their pregnancy. Having access to a NICU is critical in the event the baby requires medical attention at birth. For this reason, PMC offers the region’s only Level II Advanced Care Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). PMC’s two experienced neonatologists specialize in caring for infants born prematurely or with medical conditions that require immediate attention. The NICU at PMC can care for babies born as early as 28 weeks and weighing as little as 2.6 pounds, keeping more families together in the event these life-saving services are needed.

The comprehensive care provided by PMC obstetricians, neonatologists and their dedicated support staff ensures that pregnancies are monitored with precision, deliveries are safe and newborns receive the support they need for a healthy start in life.

The Eastern Kentucky Advanced Women’s Care Center at Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) utilizes the Da Vinci Surgical System, a robotic system designed to facilitate surgeries using a minimally invasive approach. PMC OB-GYN physicians Angela Maggard, MD and Malisa Moss, DO perform complex procedures using the da Vinci system. Patients typically see benefits through this type of surgery with shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring, less risk of infection and less blood loss.

The Da Vinci Surgical System gives the surgeon an advanced set of instruments, including a surgeon console, a patient-side cart and a vision cart. The robot mimics the surgeon’s hand movements at the console in real time, bending and rotating the instruments, moving like a human hand but with a greater range of motion. The vision cart delivers a high-definition view of the surgical area, making it possible for surgeons to operate through one or a few small, minimally invasive incisions.

Dr. Maggard performed her 100th surgery using the Da Vinci system at the beginning of November and is quickly approaching 120.

In between these major life changes, an OB/GYN can offer more generalized women’s health care by screening for cancer, treating infections and performing necessary surgeries. Pikeville Medical Center’s (PMC) Malisa Moss, DO, is one of a seven-member team of OB/GYN physicians dedicated to women’s health care needs.

Dr. Moss specializes in complex OB/GYN procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System, a robotic system designed to facilitate surgeries using a minimally invasive approach. Patients typically see benefits through this procedure with shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring, less risk of infection and less blood loss.

In addition to being one of the only OB/GYN’s in the region to perform surgical procedures with the Da Vinci system, Dr. Moss provides care for annual exams, Endometriosis, family planning, infertility, ovarian screenings, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, prenatal and postpartum care.

Dr. Moss received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and obtained her medical degree from Lincoln Memorial University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, TN. Dr. Moss completed her residency at Garden City Hospital in Michigan and is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

She practices medicine alongside PMC’s six other OB/GYN’s.

At nearly every stage in a woman’s life, an obstetrician-gynecologist, commonly known as an OB-GYN, can provide a wide range of services. Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) offers a team of dedicated physicians who specialize in women’s health and the function of the female body.

Offering services in two convenient locations, PMC’s team of seven OB-GYNs offers many minimally invasive gynecological surgery options. Each member of this team is specifically trained to use state-of-the-art equipment to deliver high quality obstetrical care.

“Women have many unique health concerns and it is important for them to establish a relationship with an OB-GYN who will monitor them throughout all stages of life,” said PMC OB-GYN, Tiffany Thompson, DO.

PMC has the largest on-call group of OB-GYN physicians in the region and is the only hospital in Eastern Kentucky to offer a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Pikeville Medical Center provides a physician-led practice which has the capability to deliver and care for babies, manage high-risk pregnancies and perform surgeries.

“We closely monitor high-risk pregnancy conditions that could affect the mother, baby or both,” said Dr. Thompson. “It is imperative that women who are pregnant or are planning to get pregnant see an OB-GYN.”

Dr. Thompson added that having a good physician-patient relationship is very important in healthcare, especially in women’s health.

For more information about PMC’s women’s health services or to schedule an appointment, please call 606-218-2207 or visit our OB/GYN pages.
